There are a variety of shoulder joint replacements available depending on the patient’s situation. Typically, the damaged parts of the shoulder will be replaced with artificial components. In a total shoulder replacement the damaged joint surfaces will be replaced with a prosthetic ball attached to a stem and a prosthetic socket. Total shoulder joint replacement can be a valuable treatment for patients with osteoarthritis and healthy rotator cuff tendons. Sometimes surgeons may leave the socket intact and replace just the upper arm bone. Patients should discuss their options with their doctors before making a decision.
