With aging comes the narrowing of the spinal canal, or space around the spinal cord, due to normal wear and tear. This is a common source of back pain and is defined as spinal stenosis. It is seen most often in people over 60 and often caused by arthritis. There are many possible non-surgical treatments for spinal stenosis, such as physical therapy. Surgical treatments include laminectomy and spinal fusion and are usually recommended if non-surgical attempts are unsuccessful in relieving pain and discomfort.
