Bursitis is characterized by the filling of the bursa with extra liquid when it becomes irritated or inflamed. The bursa is the thin sac that acts as a cushion between the bone and tissue and is normally filled with a small amount of lubricating fluid. Swelling is often the first symptom due to the extra liquid. Swelling and pain should not be ignored because infection can occur. Both non-surgical and surgical treatments are available.
