Compartments are parts of the arms and legs that contain “groups” of muscles, nerves and blood vessels. Compartment syndrome occurs when pressure builds up in these groups to a dangerous level resulting in extreme pain. Compartment syndrome can be acute or chronic. Acute compartment syndrome happens suddenly and should be addressed immediately to avoid permanent muscle damage.

Chronic compartment syndrome is usually caused by over exertion from athletic activity. The recommended treatment is usually to cease participation in athletics that require repetitive motion.
