Ankles can be fractured in any of the three bones that make up the ankle joint: the tibia (shinbone), fibula (smaller, lower leg bone) and talus (small bone between the heel bone and tibia and fibula).Multiple fractures can cause the ankle to become unstable and may stop you from walking if the ankle is forced out of place. If the ankle is still stable non-surgical treatments may be recommended. If the ankle is unstable surgery may necessary to secure the bones and ensure realignment.
