The Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in the body and used when engaging in activities such as running, walking and jumping. The tendon is a group of fibers connecting the muscles in the calf to the heel. A rupture, or tear, of the Achilles tendon most often occurs when those the fibers separate. Surgery is often the best treatment but non-surgical treatment such as a cast or walking boot can also be effective.
